Charity Care CaliforniaUnder Assembly Bill (AB) 744, chapter 755,  (2006) all hospitals in the state of California are required to provide free or discounted health care to patients that meet certain requirements. Eligibility requirements are based on income as compared to the Federal Poverty Level Guidelines (FPG) and the existence or lack there of, of a health insurance policy, and if the cost of your health care exceed 10% of your/your family’s annual income. Furthermore, all hospitals are required to make available these programs and policies.

In general, income eligibility is set to below 350% of the Federal Poverty Guideline.

Even if you’re income exceeds 350% by the FPG, you may qualify for some discounts, depending on the hospital.

Rural hospitals are exempt for the 350% FPG guideline and may have lower standards, read: more strict eligibility requirements.

Generally, hospitals will require tax returns, proof of salary, bank statements, disclosure of liquid assets.
