There are a lot of free massively multiplayer role playing games, and most of them take after the ones that aren’t. This makes it easy for those who live frugally to still play the kind of game they want without paying for a subscription fee.
Now, there aren’t a lot of articles cater to those who are looking for MMORPGs with guns specifically, so this article will give you a few of them. Note that these are role playing games with gun-classes, along with swords and sorcery, of course.
RF Online
Who doesn’t know this game? After several medieval fantasy MMORPGs, along came RF online – a game that mixed science fiction and fantasy. The story of RF revolves around three interplanetary races that battle for dominance over a planet called Novus. There’s the semi-religiously-fanatical and magical Cora, there’s the former humans-turned-full-mech Accretia, and there’s the vertically challenged Bellato (way back, I read that the Bellato home planet had a strong gravitational pull which resulted in their diminutive size, but I wasn’t so sure if it was a joke or not).
The best part about this game is that you can kill an enemy race on sight – as there is an ongoing war between the three. There’s swords, magic, and of course, guns.
Sword of the New World
Known as Granado Espada in the east, Sword of the New World features a different take on MMORPGs, which are often heavily based on either science fiction or fantasy. The feel of the game is akin to that during the age of discovery, Spanish armada, Three Musketeers, and the likes. Same as RF online, you get a nice mix of swords, magic, and guns. What separates this game from others is that you control three people – who all look like K-Pop Superstars – at a time, which gives it a real-time strategy element to the game.
Ragnarok Online
One of the first popular MMORPGs ever, Ragnarok Online has joined the “jump to free-to-play” bandwagon, but there are still premium servers. There’s a Gunslinger class in the game, and you can either be Lara Croft or the Terminator – wielding either dual pistols or shotgun, respectively. There’s even a skill called “Desperado”, a possible nod to El Mariachi. How cool is that?
R.O.S.E.
Rush On Seven Episodes, a mouthful shortened to simply “ROSE”, is published by Gravity Corp, the same guys who developed Ragnarok Online. There’s one word that pretty much sums up the look of the game: cute. A friend described ROSE – in an annoyed, sarcastic tone, mind you – as “super ultra cute”. So if cutesy anime-inspired super short characters aren’t your cup of tea, you might want to stay away from this game.
Florensia
At first glance, Florensia looks like a cross between Sword of the New World and FlyFF – the latter being another free MMORPG, albeit without guns. The gunslinger class is called the Explorer, and you have a choice between rifles, dual pistols, and shotguns. If you like being a sniper in an MMORPG, this game is good for you.
Aika Online
While Florensia embraces a semi “Super Deformed” look – a term usually confused with “Chibi” – Aika is a straighter and more normal version of it. Aika Online mixes sword and sorcery with guns, no “exploration age” theme whatsoever. You can either wield dual pistols or a rifle in this game. Gun classes are gender-locked, though. Dual pistols are always female, and Riflemen are, well, men.
Grand Fantasia
Grand Fantasia is a light-hearted – and oftentimes quite funny – MMORPG, following more in the footsteps of FlyFF and Florensia in terms of look. Graphics aren’t that good, but it is really fun to play. You take the role of a “Sprite Messenger” and the Sprite – at first resembling a small jelly blob – is your in-game pet, which crafts items for you and automatically picks up loot if you summon them in the field. The more you level up, the Sprites get stronger – which is a core part of the story.
Soul of the Ultimate Nation
Soul of the Ultimate Nation – or SUN – doesn’t really have a gunner class, but I wanted to make a special mention to this game because the Valkyrie can wield dual crossbows like she’s in a John Woo movie. When performing skills with the dual crossbows, she borrows moves from Devil May Cry’s titular character, Dante. Badass, if you ask me.
I hope you found this list quite useful if you’re looking for good free to play MMORPGs with guns in them. Stay frugal, and go for free when you can!
