Three Tips for Cooking on a Budget

by Rhee on March 27, 2011

When on a tight budget, one of the first things we try to cut down on is the things that we whip up in the kitchen. While some people would just go on a diet and skip meals to conserve stocked produces, you can actually still have a full stomach if you know how to cook on a budget. To do that, here are a few cooking tips.

Veggies

One has to wonder how many chickens there are in the world that we don’t seem to run out of them. Vegetables are still cheaper, though, so there are probably more of them – or less people wanting them. At any rate, put more vegetables in your meals. They are cheap, and you get to eat healthier.

Rice

Rice isn’t as popular in the west as it is here in the east, where rice is pretty much in every dish. The reason for this is that rice is a more filling staple than bread, and a kilo of it allows for about three meals – or more if you’re still dining “western style”. Rice meals are easy. Just cook an entrée and serve it with rice. You’d be consuming more rice than your meat, so you’re left with more meat for the next few days.

Let Loose in the Kitchen

A friend of mine used to say there’s no right or wrong in cooking – just like in the Filipino dish called adobo with which whoever cooks it can suit it to taste. Sure, there are “standard” ways of cooking a particular dish, but if you can improvise, do it! Look through the groceries you have and see what is lacking and what can be substituted for it.

For cooking on a budget, you simply have to know that meat is the most expensive aspect of your groceries. You can purchase less meat and more of the other things, and you get more produces to prepare in the kitchen. What’s more, you can then start bringing your own food to work so you can add your lunch money to your savings instead.
